Once upon a time, there was a rare and kind-hearted white elephant living at the bottom of Himalayas. He was the leader of a herd of elephants. His mother had gone blind and therefore could not look after herself.

The white elephant looked for food in the forest every day. He sent his mother the best fruit. However, his messengers always ate it up and let his mother starve (使挨饿). When he discovered this, he left his herd and took his mother to Mount Candorana and lived by a lake.

One day the elephant saved a Banaras forester who got lost in the forest. When the forester arrived home, he heard that the King’s own elephant had just died. He went to the King and told him that he could help the King find a white elephant.

The white elephant faced the forester and the King’s men. He did not want to hurt anyone, so he went away with the King to Benaras peacefully. The white elephant did not eat anything in Benaras and the King was worried. The elephant then told the King that he was upset as his blind mother was left alone in the forest. The King was moved by this and thus let the elephant return to his mother.

The white elephant took good care of his mother till she died. When he died later, the King made a statue for the elephant. An annual elephant festival was held in memory of the caring elephant.
