John worked hard as a farmer all his life, but he didn’t have much money. Now he was too old to work. He had lived all alone ever since his wife died. He had three sons.  They were all grow-nups and married. And they were so

busy with their own lives. They only had time to come by to see him and eat dinner with him once a week.

John grew weaker and weaker, and his sons came by to see him less and less. “They don’t want to be around me at all now,” he thought, “because they’re afraid I’ll become a burden (负担).” He stayed up all night worrying about what would become of him, until at last he had an idea.

The next day he asked one of his friends to make a big box for him. He took the box home, filled it with broken glass, locked it and put it under the kitchen table. The next time his sons came for dinner, they found the box.

“What’s in it?” they asked.

“Oh, nothing,” he replied, “just some things I’ve been saving.”

“There must be some gold in it.” His sons thought. So they decided to take turns living with him, and look after the old man.

At last the old man grew sick and died. His sons opened the box. They found nothing but broken glass. They poured the broken glass onto the floor until it was empty. They found some words on the bottom: Take Good Care of Your Parents.
